Shankar Dayal Sharma, the ninth President of independent India, was born on 19 August 1918 in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh. His father’s name was Khushi Lal Sharma and mother’s name was Subhadra Sharma. Shankar Dayal ji had completed his education from the universities of the country and abroad. Shankar Dayal ji started his education from St. John’s College. After this, he also took education from Agra University and Allahabad University. He went to Lucknow University for law studies (LLM). Due to his passion for education, Shankar Dayal went to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University to do Ph.D. After this he did a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of London. Even after receiving so much education, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma ji did not stop here, he taught law for 9 years at Lucknow University, and was a professor there. After this he again went to London and he also taught law to the children at Cambridge University.
Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma ji was not only ahead in studies, he was always ahead in sports too. He was a good runner and swimmer. Dr. Sharma ji has also tried his hand in journalism, he has written many articles about poetry, history, art, culture, philosophy, literature and various religions. At the time of his studies and after that when he was a teacher, from that time he started raising his voice against the British for achieving independence.
Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma political career –
The political journey of Dr. Shankar Dayal ji started in 1940, when he Freedom Struggle To participate in the Congress party took membership. This was the party, staying within which he fought many battles for independence, took part in many movements. Along with this, many elections were fought and after winning, he remained in high position. He was very honest with this party till the end of his life, he never left it. in 1942 Mahatma Gandhi Dr. Shankar Dayal ji had an important role in the “Quit India Movement” launched by. After the independence of India, Shankar Dayal ji expressed his desire to create the princely state of Bhopal as a separate entity from the Nawab of Bhopal. They wished that the rule of the Nawab in Bhopal should end now. Sharma ji led the Janata movement against the Nawab in December 1948, for which he was also arrested. On 23 January 1949, Sharma was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment for violating the ban on public meetings. Due to public pressure, on 30 April 1949, the Nawab people signed the agreement for merger with the Indian Union.
From 1950 to 1952, Dr. Shankar became the President of Bhopal Congress Committee. Thereafter, representing the Congress in 1952 itself, he became the Chief Minister of Bhopal and remained in this post till 1956. From 1956 to 1971, Dr. Shankar was a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Within these years, Dr. Shankar Dayal ji as the leader of the Congress party Indira Gandhi cooperated a lot. In 1959, when the UNESCO meeting for primary and secondary education was held in Karachi, Dr. Shankar Dayal ji represented India.
When Indira Gandhi’s government came, from 1974 to 1977, he was the Minister of Communications in the cabinet. Dr. Shankar Dayal ji twice in 1971 and 1980 Lok Sabha He stood for the seat from Bhopal, both times he got success. In this way he reached the Delhi Parliament. After this, he first became the Governor of Andhra Pradesh in 1984. Meanwhile, living in Delhi, his daughter Geetanjali and son-in-law Lalit Mecan, a politician, were killed by Sikh militants. After this Shankar left the post of Governor from Andhra Pradesh, and in 1985 became the Governor of Punjab. Violence broke out between the Indian government and Sikh militants at this time. Finally, in 1986, Dr. Shankar Dayal was the Governor of Maharashtra. He remained the governor there until 1987, until he was made the Vice President of the country. Along with the Vice President in 1987, Dr. Shankar was also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He remained on the post of Vice President for 5 years, after that in 1992 when R. Venkataraman When his term ended, Dr. Shankar Dayal ji was awarded the post of President. Shankar Dayal ji served as the President from 1992-97.
