Hathras, Mursan and Mahendra Pratap

The story dates back to the 19th century. That was the period of princely states. At that time there used to be a princely state of Mursan in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. It was here in December 1986 that the third son was born to a Jat named Ghanshyam Singh. Name was given – Mahendra Pratap. Raja Harnarayan Singh of Hathras had no son. So he adopted Mahendra Pratap. Mahendra Pratap was given good training in the country itself. At that time he had studied up to B.A. However, he could not give the final examination of BA. He was 16 years old and college was going on, when he got married to Balveer Kaur of Jind princely state.

It is said that when Mahendra Pratap and Balveer Kaur got married, the procession was to go to Sangrur. In such a situation, 2 special trains were run between Hathras and Sangrur. Just for this wedding. The wedding took place with great pomp.

Participation in Congress session

The year 1906 proved to be important for Mahendra Pratap Singh. The Indian National Congress session was to be held in Calcutta. Mahendra Pratap went against the wishes of the family members and attended that convention and from there his life changed. From there he returned painted in the colors of patriotism and Swadeshi. He started emphasizing on promoting Swadeshi, educating the people. In 1909, the university was opened in Vrindavan, which is considered to be the first center in the country to impart technical education. Today the land on which Aligarh Muslim University is situated, that land has been donated by Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh. That is why in recent times the demand to name the university after him has increased a lot. However, now the UP government has decided to build a new university in his name.

Afghanistan Connection

It is said that the owner of M/s Thomas Cook & Sons took Mahendra Pratap to England without a passport in his company’s steamer. There he met Kaiser, the ruler of Germany. From there he went to Afghanistan. Then he reached Herat via Budapest, Bulgaria, Turkey, where he met the emperor of Afghanistan and from there announced a provisional government for India from Kabul on December 1, 1915. He himself and Prime Minister Maulana Barkatullah Khan became the President.

This was the period when Afghanistan had waged war against the British. To ask for help, King Mahendra Pratap went to Russia and met Lenin. Lenin did not help. After this, from 1920 to 1946, he continued to tour abroad. World Friendship Association founded. Then returned to India in 1946. He was also an MP in the second Lok Sabha formed in 1957. He died on 29 April 1979.

How will the university be?

Now a state-level university is being built in Aligarh in the name of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh. Land was proposed for the university in Lodha and Musaipur villages of Kol tehsil. The district administration is giving 37 acres of government land for this. Apart from this, 10 acres of land will be acquired. The university is being built at a cost of more than Rs 100 crore. As of now, Rs 10 crore has been released as the first installment. It is being said that within two years this project will be completed by January 2023. After the formation of the university, it will include about 395 colleges in Aligarh, Hathras, Kasganj and Etah.
