Every year, five films are nominated for an Academy Award in the “Visual Effects” category. Each of the projects nominated this year offer a unique perspective on the amazing tricks filmmakers and their talented effects teams use to pull off complicated visual elements in some of Hollywood’s hottest movies. In recognition of these five films — and one of our favorite Oscar categories — we’re putting the spotlight on one “Visual Effects” nominee each day leading up to the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday, February 9. We’ll take a closer look at what made them stand out through interviews with the visual effects artists responsible for each film’s movie magic. 2019’s nominees included Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, The Lion King, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and 1917.
