He was born in Baramati village of Pune district, who belonged to a Marathi Hindu family there. When he was born, he was named Ramachandra. His family was also a Chitpavan Brahmin. His father was an employee in the post office and mother was a housewife, whose name was Godavari before marriage and became Lakshmi after marriage. Before his birth, his mother gave birth to 3 sons and 1 daughter. Out of which all his three sons died at the time of birth. And only one daughter was left. That’s why his mother raised him like a daughter as soon as Godse was born and even got his nose pierced. Due to which there was always a ring in his nose. Then since then his nick name was Nathuram. After the birth of Nathuram, he had another son, whom he named Gopal, who again raised him like a son.

Education and Career

He completed his primary education i.e. till the fifth standard from his local school. Then he was sent to Pune along with some of his relatives so that he could get knowledge of Hindi as well as English language there. During that time, he liked Gandhiji’s ideas very much, so he started considering him as his ideal. Godse was a calm, intelligent, forward-looking and true person. In 1930, his father was replaced in Ratnagiri city of Maharashtra. He went to live in Ratnagiri with his parents. During that time he met a supporter of Hindutva whose name was Veer Savarkar. And from here he decided to move towards politics.

Political Career

When he was in high school, he had a desire to get involved in social work. And he left his studies and joined groups like Hindu Mahasabha and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a worker. He was opposed to the separatist politics of the Muslim League. After joining the Hindu Mahasabha group, he published a newspaper for it, which was in Marathi language. The name of this newspaper was ‘Agrani’, it was given the name ‘Hindu Rashtra’ after a few years. Once Gandhiji started a movement against the British government, which was a non-violent and resistance movement, Hindu Mahasabha gave its support in this movement. But later he decided to separate from it and he also became against Gandhiji. Because he said that Gandhiji was discriminating between Hindus and minority groups (Muslim League). They are ignoring the interest of Hindus in the pursuit of appeasing the people of minority group.

He also blamed Gandhiji for the partition of India and Pakistan, in which thousands of people including Hindus and Muslims died. Due to this he decided to kill Gandhiji.

Gandhi’s Assassination

One evening when Gandhiji was doing evening prayer as usual. It was around 5:15 at that time. Then Godse entered there and came directly to Gandhiji and fired 3 bullets in his chest. The pistol with which he fired was the Bieratta M 1934 semi-automatic pistol. After this incident, Godse did not run away but stood at his place and gave his arrest. In this crime of his, 6 other companions were involved with him, including Narayan Apte. Gandhiji was immediately taken to his room, by then it was too late, because he died as soon as he went there.

After the death of Gandhi, both the Hindu Mahasabha and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were declared illegal at that time. But his assassination had nothing to do with the RSS, it was confirmed, so Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Removed the ban on RSS in 1949. After the death of Gandhiji, riots started in the country. There was a lot of fighting between Brahmins and Muslims. Especially in the Sangli and Miraj regions of Maharashtra, the houses of Brahmins were burnt in this riot. Many people criticized Gandhi ji a lot, blaming the Indian government in the conspiracy to assassinate him. Because he said that an attempt was made to kill Gandhiji even before this, then why did the government not take any action against it.

Nathuram Godse Death

After the death of Mahatma Gandhi, the proceedings of this case were started on 27 May 1948. He did not give any explanation to the court and openly admitted his crime, that he had killed Gandhi. But it took more than 1 year to finalize this case. The final verdict of this case was pronounced on 8 November 1949, in which he was sentenced to death on 15 November. His partner Narayan Apte was also an equal partner in this crime, so he was also given the death penalty. Apart from this, Savarkar, a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, was also accused of being involved in this crime, but it was later dismissed.

Godse decided that after his death his ashes should not be immersed in water. Rather, it should be kept together like this till India and Pakistan become one. They wanted their ashes to be immersed in the Indus river of Pakistan.

Why did Nathuram Godse kill Mahatma Gandhi? (Why Nathuram Godse Killed Mahatama Gandhiji)

Godse gave a statement on the same day just a year before he was sentenced. That statement was of 90 pages in which he clearly explained why he had killed Gandhiji. He stood at one place and explained each and every reason for killing Gandhiji for about 5 hours. He was not at all sorry for this crime committed by him. When he was in jail, he also wrote a book about it called ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’. In this, he clearly wrote the reason for killing Gandhiji. But its publication was banned.

Nathuram Godse Temple

in 2014 Narendra Modi ji After coming to power, the Hindu Mahasabha started an attempt to name Nathuram Godse as a patriot. He made a documentary film named ‘Deshbhakt Nathuram Godse’ and released it on 30 January 2015, the day of Gandhiji’s death anniversary. Godse’s supporters also tried to name the day of his death as ‘Sacrifice Day’. Even this organization wanted to build his temple in MP, but this could not be possible after the administration’s rejection.
