Jail Singh was also called Jarnail Singh. He was born on May 5, 1916 in Sandhwan village of Faridkot district of Punjab. His father’s name was Kisan Singh, who was a farmer and carpenter. His mother had passed away in his childhood, due to which he was brought up by his aunt. Jail Singh ji did not have much love for studies from the beginning. He did not even complete his schooling. There was always a lot of enthusiasm in the mind of Jail Singh ji to learn Urdu language, so for the fulfillment of this desire, he also acquired the knowledge of Urdu. After a while, he got into the urge to learn to play, due to lack of money, he started learning to play harmonium by washing his clothes, cooking his food at a harmonium player. On receiving his father’s opinion, he started chanting bhajans in the Gurudwara. After some time he taught the text of the Guru Granth from the Shaheed Sikh Missionary College in Amritsar, which made him a ‘professional reader’ of the Guru Granth Sahib and was awarded the title of Gyani.

Freedom Fighter Jail Singh –

For the freedom of the country and love for his country, Jail Singh ji became a member of an Akali Dal working against the British government at the age of only 15. In 1938, he formed a political party called Praja Mandal, which, along with the Indian Congress, used to organize an anti-British movement. Because of which he was sent to jail and he was sentenced to five years. During this time he changed his name to Zail Singh. During the formation of Praja Mandal Party, he met Master Tara Singh, who advised him to start his education again. But Jail Singh ji did not feel like studying and he started working in Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee.

Before independence, Giani Zail Singh became a part of various movements to make the country independent and to drive the British out of the country. In 1946, during a program in Faridkot district, Jail Singh ji was prevented from hoisting the tricolor flag by the British, upset that Jail Singh ji Jawahar Lal Nehru Inviting Ji to come to Faridkot by writing a letter. After coming to Faridkot, Nehru saw how the entire Faridkot jail followed Singhji’s words. Seeing this, Nehru ji recognized the merit of Jail Singh ji and joined his party.

Jail Singh’s political journey

After independence, Giani Zail Singh was made the Revenue Minister of the Union of Patiala and East Punjab States. 1951 Zail Singh ji became the Minister of Agriculture. Apart from this, he was also a member of Rajya Sabha from 1956 to 1962. Political Relations of Jail Singh Ji in 1969 Indira Gandhi had become much better. After that in 1972, he was appointed the Chief Minister of Punjab. Jail Singh ji was working in this post till 1977. In 1980, Jail Singh ji got a Lok Sabha seat and due to his friendship with Indira ji, Jail Singh ji was made the Home Minister of the country during his tenure.

Giani Jail Singh’s tenure as President was surrounded by controversies from beginning to end. According to the orders of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, when Operation Blue Star was launched at the Golden Temple in Amritsar with the aim of capturing the Sikh separatists, Giani Zail Singh was the President at that time. Even when the Sikh community was killed in protest against Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Jail Singh was the President. Despite being a Sikh community, he did not stop the atrocities on Sikhs, due to which he was greatly opposed, as well as criticized. after that when Rajiv Gandhi When he became the Prime Minister, news of the strain in the relations between the President and the Prime Minister was also heard to pass a bill, but Giani ji completed his work successfully and remained in this post till July 25, 1987.

Giani Zail Singh Death

Giani Jail Singh was a man of very religious personality. On 25 December 1994, while on his way to Takht Sri Keshgad Sahib, his car crashed and he died. The place where Giani Zail Singh was cremated in Delhi is known as Ekta Sthal. Even today people go there and pay homage to him. He was not only a person with a determined and courageous personality but also a dedicated Sikh. Even today in Indian politics, he is remembered as an absolute and determined person.
