बहुत समय पहले की बात है, सूर्यवंशी कुल में मान्धाता नाम का एक चक्रवर्ती  राजा हुआ करता था. वह बहुत ही महान, प्रतापी, उदार तथा प्रजा का ध्यान रखने वाला राजा  था. उस राजा का राज्य बहुत ही सुख – सम्रद्ध था, धन-धान्य भरपूर मात्रा में था. वहाँ की प्रजा राजा से बहुत अधिक प्रसन्न एवं खुशहाल थी, क्यों की राजा अपनी प्रजा का बहुत ध्यान रखता था.  साथ ही वह धर्मं के अनुसार सारे नियम करने वाला राजा था.      

एक समय की बात है राजा के राज्य में बहुत लम्बे समय तक वर्षा नहीं हुई जिसके फलस्वरूप उसके राज्य में अकाल पड़ गया, जिस से की राजा अत्यंत दुखी हो गया, क्योंकि उसकी प्रजा बहुत दुखी थी. राजा  इस संकट से उबरना चाहता था. राजा चिंता में डूब गया और चिंतन करने लगा की उस से आखिर ऐसा कौन सा पाप हो गया है. राजा इस संकट से मुक्ति पाने के लिए कोई उपाय खोजने के लिए सैनिको के साथ जंगल की ओर प्रस्थान करते है.

राजा वन में कई दिनों तक भटकता रहा और फिर एक दिन अचानक से वे अंगीरा ऋषि के आश्रम जा पंहुचे. उन्हें अत्यंत व्याकुल देख कर अंगीरा ऋषि ने उनसे उनकी व्याकुलता का कारण पूछा. राजा ने ऋषि को अपनी और अपने राज्यवासियों की परेशानी का विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन सुनाया, राजा ने ऋषि को बताया कि किस प्रकार उसके खुशहाल राज्य में अचानक अकाल पड़ गया. राजा ने ऋषि से निवेदन किया की  ‘हे! ऋषि मुनि मुझे कोई ऐसा उपाय बताये जिस से की मेरे राज्य में सुख-सम्रद्धि पुन: लौट आये’. ऋषि ने राजा की परेशानी को ध्यान पूर्वक सुना और कहा कि जिस प्रकार हम सब ब्रह्म देव की उपासना करते है किन्तु सतयुग में वेद पढ़ने का तथा तपस्या करने का अधिकार केवल ब्राह्मणों को है लेकिन आपके राज्य में एक शुद्र तपस्या कर रहा है. आपके राज्य में आज अकाल की दशा उसी कारण से है. यदि आप अपने राज्य को पूर्ववत खुशहाल देखना चाहते है तो उस शुद्र की जीवनलीला समाप्त कर दीजिये.

यह सुन कर राजा को बहुत अचम्भा हुआ और राजा ने कहा कि ‘हे ऋषि मुनि में आप यह क्या कह रहे है मैं ऐसे किसी निर्दोष जीव की हत्या नहीं कर सकता, मैं एक निर्दोष की हत्या का पाप अपने सर नहीं ले सकता. मैं ऐसा अपराध नहीं कर सकता न ही ऐसे अपराधबोध के साथ जीवन भर जीवित रह सकता हूँ. आप मुझ पर कृपा करें और मेरी समस्या के समाधान के लिए कोई अन्य उपाय बताएं’. ऋषि ने राजा को कहा कि यदि आप उस शुद्र की जीवनलीला समाप्त नहीं कर सकते है तो मैं आपको दूसरा उपाय बता रहा हूँ. आप आषाढ़ मास की शुक्ल एकादशी को पुरे विधि विधान एवं पूर्ण श्रद्धा- भक्ति के साथ व्रत रखे एवं पूजन आदि करें. राजा ने ऋषि की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए, अपने राज्य पुनः वापस आया तथा  राजा एकादशी व्रत पुरे विधि विधान से किया है. जिसके फलस्वरूप राजा के राज्य में वर्षा हुई, जिस से अकाल दूर हो जाता है तथा पूरा राज्य पहले की तरह हंसी-ख़ुशी रहने लगता है.

ऐसा माना जाता है की एकादशी व्रत सभी व्रतों में उत्तम होता हैं एवं इसकी कथा सुनने या सुनाने से भी पापों का नाश होता है.

Long ago, there was a great king named Mandhata who ruled over his kingdom with great wisdom and compassion. One day, a severe drought struck his kingdom, and the crops started failing, leading to a severe food shortage. The people started suffering, and many of them died due to hunger.

To save his people, King Mandhata consulted his advisors and learned that there was a way to end the drought. The sages advised him to observe the Dev Shayani Ekadashi fast and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu.
