Pilavulkandi Thekkeparambil Usha was born on 27 June 1964 in Payyoli village, popularly known as PT Usha. His father’s name is EPM Paital, and mother’s name is TV Lakshmi. PT Usha had very poor health in childhood, but she improved her health during her primary school days, and people started seeing the image of a great athlete in her.
In 1976, the Government of Kerala started a Women’s Sports Center in Kannur. 12-year-old PT Usha was among the 40 women who were selected for training here. His first coach was O.M. was number. PT Usha started his international career as an athlete with the ‘Pakistan Open National Meet’ held in Karachi in 1980. In this athlete meet, PT Usha won 4 gold medals for India. After this, he made more efforts to improve his performance further, and started preparing fiercely for the Olympics to be held in 1984.
