Arun Gawli was born in Kopar village of Ahmed Nagar district of Maharashtra. Gawli is married to Asha Gawli, Member of Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra. The couple has two children, a daughter named Geeta Gawli, who is in the post of ABS corporator in the Municipal Corporation of Chinchpokli assembly constituency. There is a second son, whose name is Mahesh Gawli.

Gawli worked in Mumbai’s textile mills located in the central areas of Parel, Chinchpokli, Byculla and Cotton Green. In 1970, Gawli and his brother Kishore entered the Mumbai underworld. After that he joined the Byculla company and started monitoring their illegal liquor business. This criminal gang company under the leadership of Rama Naik and Babu Reshim operated between Central Mumbai and Byculla. From the 1970s to the 1980s, Gawli started engaging in such activities to earn quick money by attacking Mumbai’s textile mill industry, extorting weeks. In 1984, Rama Naik helped Dawood Ibrahim kill Samad Khan, his rival. From 1984 to 1988, Byculla Company supported every criminal activities of Dawood. In 1988, there was a dispute between Rama Naik and Sharad Shetty over a land deal, in which Dawood supported Shetty. Because of this, Rama Naik got angry and insulted Dawood. However, after that Rama Naik died in a 1998 police encounter, after which Gawli took control of this criminal gang and started operating it from his home. A fierce battle later ensued between Gawli’s gang and Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company gang, as Gawli believed that Naik’s murder was at the behest of Dawood. Fearing Gawli’s gang, many goons of Dawood’s D-Company like Sharad Shetty, Chhota Rajan and Sunil Sawant later had to leave Mumbai and move to Dubai.
Arun Gawli took over the gang based on Dagdi Chawal, which was raided several times by the Mumbai Police and broke this underworld Gawli gang. Gawli was arrested several times for his criminal activities and was also detained several times during his interrogation. Although in most of the cases he escaped without conviction because no one was ready to testify against him because of his fear. In August 2012, the court had convicted Gawli for the murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamalakar Jamshedkar. About 15 cases were registered against Gawli from 1986 to 2005, but the police have not been able to prove any crime so far.
During the 1980s, the Mumbai Police was criticized by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray when the police had done it against Hindu goons like Arun Gawli and Sai Banod. This was a sign that Gawli enjoyed political patronage, although Gawli parted ways with the Shiv Sena in the mid-1990s. After this he killed many Shiv Sena people and later formed a separate party of his own. Gawli is the founder of the All India Sena political party, a party in Maharashtra.
In 2004, Gawli contested from Chinchpokli Assembly Constituency and was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly as an All India Army candidate. After that Gawli’s reputation grew rapidly, it is believed that due to his native roots, he has distinguished himself as a non-Marathi speaking leader.
Gawli suffered a major setback in politics when his nephew Sachin Ahir, who was also an MLA of the All India Party, openly opened a front against him and joined Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party. Sachin Ahir later contested the Lok Sabha elections on Nationalist Congress Party ticket in opposition to Gawli. Both Sachin and Gawli were defeated in this election.
Arun Gawli Controversy
- In 1986, the arrest of criminal members of the Cobra gang Parasnath Pandey and Sashi Rasham in the murder case was in controversy.
- Gawli’s gang was involved in the murder of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh More and Balasaheb Thackeray’s confidant Jayant Jadhav and MLA Zoudin Bukhari.
- In 2007, Gawli was embroiled in controversies over allegations of giving a betel nut for the murder of Shiv Sena mayor Kamalakar Jamsandekar in the municipal corporation.

In 2015, a Marathi film based on the life of Arun Gawli, ‘Dagdi Chaal’ was made, in which Gawli’s character was played by actor Makarand Deshpande. In 2017 also, a film based on Gawli’s life is going to be made, in which the character of Arun Gawli will be played by actor Arjun Rampal.
